What is QIV?

QIV (Quebra Isolada de Vidros — Isolated Glass Breakage) is a specific coverage within car insurance in Portugal that covers the costs of repairing or replacing vehicle glass. It is one of the most widely used coverages by Portuguese drivers, since glass is permanently exposed to risks such as stone chips, gravel, vandalism, adverse weather conditions and various accidents.

The main benefit of QIV is that, in the majority of policies, no excess (deductible) is applied to the policyholder — meaning the driver pays nothing for glass repair or replacement. Additionally, using this coverage does not affect the no-claims bonus/malus scale of the insurance, which means the annual premium will not increase for having claimed on QIV.

Important note: QIV is an optional coverage. It is normally included in comprehensive (all-risks) insurance policies, but can also be taken out as an additional coverage on third-party liability policies. Always check the conditions of your policy.

How does the QIV process work?

Claiming on QIV coverage is a simple and quick process. In the vast majority of cases, the policyholder does not need to pay anything upfront — payment is made directly between the insurer and the service provider. Here are the detailed steps:

Report the claim to your insurer

Contact your insurer or insurance broker to report the glass damage. Most insurers have dedicated phone lines, mobile apps and online portals to facilitate reporting. You will need to provide the registration number, the type of damage and the location of the impact.

Obtain the claim number

After reporting, the insurer assigns a claim number and authorises the service. In many cases, authorisation is immediate, especially when the damage is clearly covered by the policy. Some insurers send the authorisation directly to the provider.

Choose your service provider

The policyholder has the right to free choice of provider. You may choose an approved provider (Carglass, Glassdrive, ExpressGlass, among others) or any other provider you trust. With approved providers, the process is simpler and payment is made directly.

Schedule and carry out the service

Contact your chosen provider, give the claim number and schedule the work. The service can be carried out at a fixed centre or, in many cases, through a mobile unit that travels to the location indicated by the customer. Windscreen replacement typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes.

Direct payment from insurer to provider

When the provider is approved, payment is made directly by the insurer. The policyholder only signs the work order. If you opt for a non-approved provider, you may need to pay upfront and request reimbursement from the insurer by submitting the invoice.

Tip: Approved provider vs. free choice

Opting for an approved provider significantly simplifies the process. The provider handles all the paperwork, payment is direct and the policyholder does not need to pay anything upfront. In the case of free choice, always confirm with the insurer the coverage limits and reimbursement procedures beforehand.

What is covered by QIV?

QIV coverage encompasses all glass and glazed elements of the vehicle. Depending on the insurer and the particular policy conditions, the following are typically covered:

  • Windscreen (front glass) — the most frequently damaged glass, subject to impacts from stones and gravel thrown up by other vehicles.
  • Side windows — door windows (front and rear), frequently damaged by attempted theft or vandalism.
  • Rear window — the rear glass of the vehicle, usually tempered and featuring demisting filaments.
  • Wing mirrors — the lenses of the side mirrors, subject to damage from side collisions or vandalism.
  • Panoramic sunroof — covered under the majority of policies, although some insurers may apply special conditions due to the high cost of this component.

Please note: QIV covers both repair (resin injection for small chips) and full replacement of the glass. Whenever possible, repair is the preferred option — it is faster, more economical and more environmentally sustainable. See the services page for more details.

Common QIV exclusions

Although QIV is a comprehensive coverage, there are situations that are generally excluded. It is essential that the policyholder is aware of these limitations to avoid surprises:

  • Pre-existing damage — cracks or chips that existed before the coverage was taken out or before the date of the reported claim.
  • Natural wear and tear — surface scratches, opacity or deterioration resulting from prolonged vehicle use and exposure to the elements.
  • Non-approved modifications — films, stickers, tinting or alterations made to the glass without type approval may invalidate the coverage.
  • Mechanical damage — faults in window lift mechanisms or associated electrical systems are not covered by QIV.
  • Heavy commercial vehicles — depending on the policy, goods vehicles with a high gross weight may have special conditions or additional exclusions.
  • Claims under the influence — damage occurring when the driver is under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances may be excluded.

Recommendation: Always read the General and Particular Conditions of your car insurance policy. If in doubt, contact your insurance broker before making a claim.

QIV and ADAS calibration

Modern vehicles are increasingly equipped with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) — front cameras, rain and light sensors, radars and other devices mounted on or near the windscreen. When the windscreen is replaced, these systems require mandatory calibration to ensure their correct operation.

The good news for policyholders is that, in the vast majority of policies in Portugal, ADAS calibration is considered an integral part of the windscreen replacement service and is covered by QIV at no additional cost. This includes:

  • Static calibration (with target board in a controlled environment)
  • Dynamic calibration (road test at a specific speed)
  • Reprogramming of rain and light sensors
  • Recalibration of cameras for automatic emergency braking systems (AEB)
  • Adjustment of lane assist systems (LKA/LDW)

Important: not all providers perform ADAS calibration

ADAS calibration requires specialised equipment and certified technicians. When choosing your provider, confirm that they have the capability to carry out calibration for your vehicle model. The main networks — Carglass, Glassdrive and ExpressGlass — offer this service at the majority of their centres.

Practical tips for policyholders

To make the most of your QIV coverage and ensure a hassle-free process, follow these recommendations:

  1. Check your policy — confirm that you have active QIV coverage before you need it. If you only have third-party insurance, consider adding this coverage for the small additional cost it represents.
  2. Do not delay repairs — a small chip on the windscreen can quickly turn into a crack that requires full replacement. Timely repair is faster and more economical.
  3. Photograph the damage — take photos of the damage before contacting the insurer. This can speed up the reporting and authorisation process.
  4. Choose certified providers — opt for recognised providers that use type-approved glass and offer a guarantee on the service.
  5. Confirm ADAS calibration — if your vehicle has a front camera or sensors on the windscreen, make sure the provider carries out calibration after replacement.
  6. Keep the documentation — retain the work order, glass warranty certificate and ADAS calibration confirmation for future reference.
  7. Know your rights — the policyholder has the right to free choice of provider, to the use of glass of equivalent quality to the original, and to a professional service with warranty.

Did you know? In Portugal, more than 500,000 windscreens are replaced per year, and the vast majority are covered by QIV. The average cost of a windscreen replacement ranges from 200 to 800 euros, and can exceed 1,500 euros in premium vehicles with integrated ADAS technology.

Frequently asked questions about QIV

QIV (Quebra Isolada de Vidros — Isolated Glass Breakage) is a specific coverage within car insurance that covers the costs of repairing or replacing vehicle glass — windscreen, side windows, rear window, wing mirrors and, in some policies, the panoramic sunroof. It is an independent coverage that does not affect the policyholder's no-claims bonus/malus.

In the majority of policies in Portugal, QIV has no excess — the policyholder pays nothing. However, some insurers may apply an excess in specific situations, such as glass with special technology (HUD, integrated heating), large panoramic sunroofs, or when the policyholder chooses a provider outside the approved network. Always check the conditions of your policy.

Yes. In the vast majority of policies in Portugal, ADAS system calibration is considered an integral part of the windscreen replacement service and is covered by QIV at no additional cost to the policyholder. This applies to both static and dynamic calibration, including front cameras, rain/light sensors and radars.

Yes, the policyholder has the right to free choice of provider. You may opt for an approved provider — where the process is simpler and payment is made directly between the insurer and the provider — or any other provider you trust. In the latter case, you may need to pay upfront and request reimbursement from the insurer, within the limits defined in the policy.

Yes, QIV covers both the repair of small chips (through resin injection) and the full replacement of the glass. Repair is always the preferred option when technically feasible, as it is faster (approximately 30 minutes), more economical and more environmentally friendly. A chip is generally repairable when its diameter is less than 2 cm and it is not in the driver's direct field of vision.

No. Using QIV coverage does not affect the no-claims bonus/malus scale of your car insurance. An isolated glass breakage claim is classified as an independent event and is not counted towards annual premium increases. You can claim on QIV whenever needed without fear of any penalty on the cost of your insurance.
